A Topography of Shifting Views - Gwyneth Leech

BIO:Gwyneth Leech is an artist based in New York City, known for her paintings in oils and acrylics of skeletal, unfinished skyscrapers under construction in Manhattan. She works in series that can span months or years, capturing building phases in accurate detail and rich color. Her paintings document change and the in-between stages of buildings, capturing temporary shapes that regularly become prominent features of the cityscape. Her current work is focused on the intense color fields created by giant LED billboards in and around Times Square and the way they are reflected on the sidewalk sheds of ubiquitous construction sites in the area. Leech’s focus on construction as subject matter began in 2015 when a 42-floor building went up right outside her painting studio window in the Garment District. She was losing a view she loved but decided to give this unwanted change her full attention. She made scores of drawings and paintings of the transformation from the foundation up. By the time it topped out, building construction had become an enduring fascination. Leech’s artwork has been featured in solo and group shows throughout the United States and Great Britain and is the subject of a multi-award-winning documentary, The Monolith. Her paintings are held in private and construction-industry corporate collections in the USA, Great Britain, Italy and Australia, including the New-York Historical Society Museum. She holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a BFA and Postgraduate Diploma from Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland.
